What are Stem Cells?
At SMNW we use only Mesenchymal Stem Cells from 3rd party tested laboratory sources. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) are derived from the umbilical cord tissue of healthy Caesarean child births. This cell line is particularly useful in sports medicine when cartilage regeneration and joint preservation is the clinic goal. You clinician has options on what source of cell tissue to use based on your clinical presentation and your individual goals and needs. Cell lines derived from tissues on the mother’s side of the placenta are full of healing factors there to help the mother recover from child birth. Cell lines derived from the child’s side of the placenta in the part know as the Wharton’s Jelly are a storehouse of MSC stem cells.

How Do Stem Cells Work?
MSCs are always present in your body, but at decreasing rates as you age. By the age of skeletal maturity, the number of viable MSCs is reduced to 10% of the levels you had at birth.
MSCs are not anti-inflammatories. Instead they act as inflammatory modulators. What that means is that their presence signals to the body that it is time to move from the inflammation phase of wound healing to the collagen synthesis phase of wound healing. Scientists believe that is why studies consistently show improved cartilage quality in post-treatment MRI scans of knees treated with stem cell injections.
Are Stem Cells Safe?
MSC stem cells are very safe to use in sports medicine. The injected MSCs are not prone to tumor formation and circulate, doing their work in your body for 4-8 months before being cleared by your immune system.
The few cases of adverse effects associated with stem cell treatments involve user error in the administration of stem cells rather than any inherent risks of the medicine. One of the most high profile examples is when MSCs were mixed with prp and injected into the eye ball for the intended cure of macular degeneration of the eye. The result was loss of vision.
